Chiropractic Care as Migraine Treatment: Our Approach
Migraines are debilitating — but they don't have to be a life sentence. Discover how chiropractic care addresses the underlying triggers of migraines with a natural, drug-free approach.
Migraines are far more than bad headaches. They are complex neurological events that can cause severe, throbbing head pain — often on one side — along with nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. For the approximately 39 million Americans who experience migraines, an attack can mean hours or days of lost function, missed work, and significant suffering.
Conventional migraine treatment relies heavily on pharmaceutical management — both preventive medications taken daily and acute treatments taken at the onset of an attack. While these medications can be effective, they come with side effects, costs, and limitations. Many migraine sufferers are looking for natural, drug-free approaches that address the underlying causes rather than just suppressing symptoms.
Chiropractic care is one of the most evidence-supported natural approaches to migraine management, and at Back 2 Health Chiropractic in Lubbock, TX, it’s an approach we use with significant success.
The Connection Between the Spine and Migraines
To understand why chiropractic care can help migraines, it helps to understand the neurological relationship between the cervical spine and the brain’s pain-processing systems.
The Trigeminocervical Complex
The trigeminal nerve is the primary pain-sensing nerve for the head and face, and it plays a central role in migraine pathophysiology. What’s less commonly known is that the trigeminal nucleus — where trigeminal pain signals are processed — extends down into the upper cervical spinal cord, to approximately the level of C2-C3.
This anatomical overlap, known as the trigeminocervical complex, means that cervical nerve irritation can “talk to” the trigeminal pain system and potentially trigger or amplify migraine attacks. Conversely, cervical spinal adjustments can influence the sensitivity of this system.
Cervical Muscle Tension and Referred Pain
The muscles of the upper cervical spine — particularly the suboccipital muscles at the base of the skull and the upper trapezius — refer pain directly into the head when they are in sustained tension or spasm. Many migraines are preceded or accompanied by cervical muscle tightness, and for some patients, the cervicogenic (originating in the neck) component of their pain is significant.
Altered Cerebrospinal Fluid Flow
There is emerging evidence that upper cervical misalignment can affect the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) around the brain and spinal cord. CSF pressure dynamics are relevant to migraine, and restoring proper cervical alignment may improve these dynamics.
What the Research Says
The evidence for chiropractic care in migraine management is growing. Key findings include:
- A landmark study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that spinal manipulative therapy produced outcomes comparable to prophylactic drug therapy in migraine patients, with fewer side effects
- Multiple studies have shown that cervical spinal manipulation reduces both the frequency and severity of migraine attacks in a significant proportion of patients
- A 2019 randomized controlled trial found that chiropractic care resulted in reductions in migraine frequency, duration, and intensity, with benefits sustained at 12-month follow-up
These findings are consistent with our clinical experience at Back 2 Health Chiropractic — many patients who come to us for migraine management see significant improvements within the first few weeks of care.
Our Approach to Migraine Treatment
Thorough Assessment
We begin with a comprehensive evaluation that includes a detailed history of your migraines: frequency, duration, severity, pattern of occurrence, known triggers, associated symptoms, and what has helped or worsened them in the past. We also assess your cervical spine, postural patterns, and neurological function.
Understanding your individual migraine profile allows us to tailor treatment to your specific pattern.
Cervical and Upper Thoracic Adjustments
The foundation of our chiropractic migraine treatment is specific, gentle adjustments to the upper cervical and upper thoracic spine. We focus on:
- C1 (Atlas) and C2 (Axis) — the top two vertebrae, which have the most direct relationship with cranial nerve function and cerebrospinal fluid dynamics
- C2-C3 — the levels most closely associated with the trigeminocervical complex
- Upper thoracic spine (T1-T4) — restrictions here contribute to cervicogenic muscle tension that refers into the head
We use the technique best suited to your anatomy and comfort level, including instrument-assisted adjusting (Activator) for patients who prefer a gentler approach.
Soft Tissue Therapy for Suboccipital Muscles
Releasing tension in the suboccipital muscle group — the four small muscles at the base of the skull — is often a key part of migraine treatment. We use manual release techniques, trigger point therapy, and instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization to address these muscles specifically.
Many patients notice immediate relief of head pressure and neck tension after this portion of treatment.
Lifestyle and Trigger Identification
We work with migraine patients to identify lifestyle factors that may be contributing to their attack frequency. Common modifiable triggers include:
- Dehydration
- Irregular sleep patterns
- Skipping meals or blood sugar fluctuations
- Prolonged screen time and postural stress
- Excessive caffeine or caffeine withdrawal
- Certain foods and food additives
Addressing these factors alongside spinal care produces better outcomes than either approach alone.
Postural Rehabilitation
For patients who spend significant time at a desk or looking at screens, the postural component of cervicogenic headache can be significant. Forward head posture — where the head translates forward relative to the shoulders — creates substantial biomechanical stress on the upper cervical spine. For every inch of forward head translation, the effective weight of the head on the cervical spine increases by approximately 10 pounds.
Postural correction exercises and ergonomic guidance are part of our comprehensive migraine management plan.
You can read more about our chiropractic care philosophy and how we treat other headache types on our services page. For patients whose migraines are accompanied by cervical disc issues, our spinal decompression therapy may also be beneficial.
What to Expect
Most migraine patients see meaningful improvement within 4-8 visits. The typical pattern is a gradual reduction in frequency first, followed by reduced severity and duration. Some patients experience dramatic improvement very quickly; others require a longer-term approach.
We reassess your progress regularly and adjust the plan as needed. Our goal is not to keep you coming indefinitely — it’s to identify the care frequency that gives you sustained relief and teach you the self-care strategies that help maintain it.
Is Chiropractic Safe for Migraines?
Yes — cervical chiropractic adjustments performed by a licensed chiropractor are safe for the vast majority of migraine patients. We conduct a thorough assessment before beginning care to identify any contraindications, and we use techniques appropriate for each individual patient’s history and anatomy.
If you are currently taking prescription migraine medications, chiropractic care is compatible and can often reduce your need for medication over time — but you should continue any prescribed treatments unless advised otherwise by your prescribing physician.
If you’re a migraine sufferer in Lubbock, TX who is tired of managing attacks reactively and wants to explore what proactive, natural care can do for you, we’re ready to help.
