Dry Needling
Trigger point dry needling uses thin filiform needles to release painful muscle knots, reduce tension, and accelerate healing.
What is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is a modern, evidence-based technique in which a trained practitioner inserts thin, sterile filiform needles directly into myofascial trigger points — tight, hypersensitive bands within muscle tissue. Unlike acupuncture, which is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and focuses on energy meridians, dry needling is grounded in Western anatomy and neuroscience. Its goal is specifically to deactivate trigger points, restore normal muscle function, and reduce pain.
The term “dry” refers to the fact that no substance is injected — the therapeutic effect comes entirely from the needle itself stimulating the tissue. When a needle penetrates an active trigger point, it often elicits a local twitch response: a brief, involuntary contraction of the muscle. This twitch response is a positive sign that the trigger point is being deactivated, which quickly reduces localized pain, normalizes muscle tone, and improves blood flow to the area.
At Back 2 Health Chiropractic in Lubbock, dry needling is used as a powerful complement to spinal adjustments and other soft-tissue therapies to address the full picture of a patient’s musculoskeletal condition.
Benefits of Dry Needling
- Rapid trigger point release — Often provides immediate reduction in muscle tightness and referred pain
- Improved range of motion — Releasing tight bands within muscles restores full joint mobility
- Reduced pain sensitivity — Deactivating trigger points lowers the local and central nervous system’s pain response
- Accelerated healing — Stimulates blood flow and tissue repair in areas of chronic tension
- Complements chiropractic care — Addresses the muscular component of pain so spinal adjustments hold longer
- Minimal recovery time — Brief soreness similar to post-exercise muscle fatigue is common, but most patients return to normal activities the same day
- Effective for chronic and acute conditions — Works for both long-standing myofascial pain and recent injuries
- No medications required — A drug-free approach to muscle pain
What to Expect During Treatment
Before your first dry needling session, Dr. Chavez or your treating provider will perform a thorough assessment to identify active trigger points contributing to your pain. The location, size, and depth of each trigger point determines needle placement.
During the session, very thin needles — comparable in diameter to a human hair — are inserted into the target muscle. You may feel little to nothing on insertion, or a brief ache when the needle reaches the trigger point. When a local twitch response occurs, you may feel a short, sharp sensation followed by immediate muscle relaxation. Sessions typically last 15–30 minutes.
Mild soreness in the treated area is normal for 24–48 hours after treatment and is similar to how muscles feel after a hard workout. Ice, gentle movement, and hydration help manage any post-treatment soreness. Most patients experience meaningful improvement within one to three sessions, though complex or chronic conditions may require a longer course of care.
