Gua Sha / Scraping Massage

Instrument-assisted soft-tissue therapy that breaks up fascial adhesions, reduces chronic pain, and restores normal tissue mobility.

What is Gua Sha / Scraping Massage?

Gua sha — also known as instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization (IASTM) or scraping massage — is a therapeutic technique that uses smooth-edged tools, typically made of jade, stone, or stainless steel, to apply controlled pressure and friction across the skin and underlying soft tissues. The term “gua sha” comes from the Chinese words for “scraping” and the redness it produces, but modern clinical applications extend far beyond traditional use.

When a practitioner moves the gua sha tool across a restricted area of soft tissue, the controlled shear forces disrupt and break down scar tissue, fascial adhesions, and areas of fibrosis that have formed in response to injury, overuse, or chronic tension. This mechanical stimulus also activates the body’s healing response, recruiting fibroblasts to lay down healthier, more organized connective tissue in place of the disorganized scar tissue being cleared away.

At Back 2 Health Chiropractic in Lubbock, TX, gua sha and instrument-assisted scraping techniques are used to address stubborn soft-tissue problems that do not resolve with spinal adjustments or traditional massage alone. Dr. Brett Chavez incorporates these tools strategically for patients with chronic pain, post-surgical scar tissue, or restricted range of motion.

Benefits of Gua Sha / Scraping Massage

  • Fascial adhesion release — Breaks up the stuck, restrictive connective tissue layers that limit mobility and perpetuate pain
  • Scar tissue remodeling — Stimulates the body to replace disorganized scar tissue with healthier collagen
  • Improved range of motion — Restoring tissue mobility allows joints to move freely through their full range
  • Reduced chronic pain — Addresses the structural tissue changes underlying long-standing pain conditions
  • Accelerated healing response — Controlled microtrauma stimulates blood flow and fibroblast activity
  • Reduction in nerve entrapment symptoms — Releasing fascial tissue around nerve pathways can reduce tingling and numbness
  • Complements chiropractic adjustments — Soft-tissue work allows the skeleton to move more freely
  • Minimal side effects — Temporary redness (petechiae) is normal and fades within days

What to Expect During Treatment

During a gua sha or scraping session, your provider will apply a light lubricant to the target area before using the tool. This reduces friction and allows the instrument to glide across the skin while still delivering therapeutic pressure to the underlying tissue layers.

You will feel firm pressure and a scraping sensation as the tool moves across the treatment area. When the tool passes over an adhesion or area of fibrosis, you may feel a “gritty” or resistant texture — this is the tissue restriction being engaged. The area will typically develop temporary redness or deeper discoloration as increased blood flow and metabolic activity are stimulated. This response is called “sha” and is a normal, expected part of the treatment.

Sessions typically last 15–30 minutes for the targeted area. Mild soreness and sensitivity in the treated area are common for 24–48 hours. Staying well-hydrated, applying ice if needed, and gentle movement will support your recovery between sessions.

A course of care often involves multiple sessions over several weeks, combined with therapeutic exercises to reinforce the tissue changes achieved through scraping.
